It is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Kansas City and is a popular tourist destination. The building is currently home to offices, apartments, and a hotel. It is also home to the Kansas City Museum, which houses exhibits on the history of the city and the power industry. The Kansas City Power and Light Building is a symbol of the city's history and its ability to thrive during difficult times.

History

The Kansas City Power and Light Building was designed by the Kansas City architecture firm of Hoit, Price, and Barnes. The building is a 36-story structure that stands 628 feet tall. It is located in the downtown business district of Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City Power and Light Building was built in 1931 and is currently the tallest building in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Power and Light Company occupied the top 12 floors of the building until 1987 when it was sold to separate owners. The Kansas City Public Library occupied the ground floor from 1978 until 2004 when it moved to a new location. Kansas City Power and Light used to occupy the Kansas City Power & Light Building. The company vacated the building in 1991 after using it as its headquarters for nearly 60 years.

The Power & Light Building began a transformation into an apartment tower in October 2014. NorthPoint Development, a Riverside-based company, led the $55 million project, which was completed in 2016. The finished product includes 210 apartments in the historic tower and 81 units constructed wrapping around and built above a new 500-stall parking garage serving the building. The project breathed new life into the Power & Light Building, which had been vacant for nearly 20 years, and helped to revitalize the downtown area. In addition to providing much-needed housing, the new development has also spurred economic growth by attracting new businesses and jobs to the area. The Power & Light Building is once again a thriving part of downtown Kansas City thanks to this innovative redevelopment project.

Power and Light Building Features

The Kansas City Power and Light Building is a landmark in the city center, towering over its neighbors at 34 stories tall. The exterior is clad in Indiana limestone, and the 21-foot lantern on the top of the building is a beacon for miles around. The multicolor floodlights that illuminate the structure at night are a popular attraction for city residents and visitors alike. The top floors offer views of the cityscape that are unparalleled in the area.

Inside the building is the Power and Light Apartment, which offers luxurious amenities such as private rooftop pool, dry sauna, and a resident beacon lounge.

Power and Light Apartments

Stepping into the Power & Light Building is like stepping back in time. The grand lobby with its soaring ceilings and marble floors is straight out of the Art Deco era. But the apartment homes have all the modern amenities that today's residents are looking for. The one- and two-bedroom apartments have been meticulously restored, with original details like hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. But they also feature modern kitchens with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. Residents of the Power & Light Building also have access to a wide range of amenities, including a 24-hour fitness center, a rooftop deck with stunning views of downtown Kansas City, and an on-site business center. There's also a coffee shop and a retail storefront on the ground floor of the building. So whether you're looking for a taste of history or all the modern conveniences, Power & Light Apartments is the perfect place to call home.
